The original house was built in 1550; however, it underwent extensive rebuilding in 1770.

The New Forest was 'created' by William the Conqueror in 1079, as a royal hunting ground named Nova Foresta.

At this time, the word 'forest' meant an area of countryside, not necessarily woodland, set aside for royal hunting.

The building is reputed to have been owned by the Duchy of Westminster and used as a RoyalHunting Lodge. It was converted into a hotel in the 1950's and underwent extensive renovations in the 1990's.

In keeping with its heritage, the Woodlands has been sympathetically converted to a comfortable andmodern country house hotel, whilst still retaining the charms and character of an English country home.
